Can UV-C Light Kill The COVID-19 Coronavirus?
A question that we frequently get at Luumyn is whether our UV bags (which use UV-C light to kill bacteria & viruses) are able to kill the COVID-19 coronavirus.
The COVID-19 coronavirus was first identified in 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei, China.
As the COVID-19 coronavirus is still a relatively new virus, there is little empirical evidence or research done thus far on whether the COVID-19 coronavirus can be effectively killed by UV-C light.
It should be noted, however, that UV-C light has been proven to be effective against other coronaviruses such as Sars & Mers, which suggests that it should have the same killing effectiveness on the COVID-19 coronavirus as well.
Also, it was reported that Chinese banks used UV light to disinfect bank notes during the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus in China in February 2020.
There is also ample scientific evidence that supports the fact that in general, UV-C light effectively kills bacteria, viruses & other pathogens.
Therefore, while we cannot yet confirm that UV-C light is able to kill the particular coronavirus known as COVID-19, we know that there is a wealth of scientific evidence that supports the fact that UV-C light can and does effectively kill a host of bacteria, viruses & pathogens due to its germicidal properties, and that UV-C light is also able to kill other forms of coronaviruses (such as Sars & Mers).
